What is a DPO

Privacy and Data Protection compliance is a full time role for our outsourced DPOs. They understand the requirements of the legislation as well as what Regulators want to see when evaluating an organisations’ compliance infrastructure.

Our external DPOs have BCS and CIPP qualifications have all previously worked in senior Data Privacy roles supporting some of Europe’s biggest companies. They can ensure the necessary independence of the role and have direct experience of working with Data Protection Authorities across Europe.

The advantages of an external DPO

An external DPO can help your business by ensuring the necessary independence of the role whilst brining the experience of regular interaction with the Supervisory Authorities.

As Privacy and Data Protection compliance is an outsourced DPO’s full time role, they are well versed in the requirements of the legislation and what Regulators look for in compliance. They are up to date with the latest best practice or hot topics and bring the experience of diverse businesses and their methods to the role.

Role of DPO

The role of the DPO is set out in the GDPR as being:

  • Informing the business of their obligations under GDPR Monitoring Compliance
  • Ensuring awareness and appropriate training of staff
  • Advising on the business infrastructure for managing compliance
  • Provide advice on undertaking Data Privacy Impact Assessments Cooperation and liaison with the relevant Supervisory Authority on behalf of the business as required

In practice this means that a DPO needs to link into the people within a business who are responsible for handling personal data – this might be a compliance or legal role, or senior member for smaller businesses – to understand the processing of personal data at both a strategic and operational level.
